A straw, also known as a drinking straw, is a cylindrical, hollow plastic product primarily used for drinking beverages from a cup. It can also be used to suck out the marrow from cooked animal bones.
Generally, straws are about 0.5 cm in diameter, but thicker straws, sometimes up to 1.2 cm in diameter, are used for drinks like yogurt and bubble tea. Less common, very small straws are used for hot drinks.
Straws work on the principle of atmospheric pressure. When used, sucking in some air removes pressure from the straw, creating a decrease in pressure inside. To balance this pressure, atmospheric pressure forces the liquid inside the straw to rise.
